QuarkCopyDesk 7 is the latest release of the premier stand-alone text and picture editing software from Quark. It enables writers, editors, and other non-designers to meet the demands of fast-paced editorial workflows head-on.
Sharing the code base with QuarkXPress, QuarkCopyDesk gives you Quark‘s renowned typographic controls. Layouts created in QuarkXPress can be exported to QuarkCopyDesk easily. When writers or editors open an article in QuarkCopyDesk, they can see the layout and write or edit to fit precisely within the established design.
The unique image-handling capabilities of QuarkCopyDesk and its support for QuarkXPress 7 features — such as drop shadows, opacity, and picture effects — make it the tool of choice for hybrid editors who want to manage both text and picture content in their articles. QuarkCopyDesk is compatible with QuarkXPress 7, so formatted files move seamlessly between the two applications, which streamlines production and saves time and money.
Copyfit precision through QuarkXPress 7 compatibility
Layouts created in QuarkXPress 7 can easily be exported to QuarkCopyDesk and all attributes such as style sheets, article geometry, hyphenation, and justification rules are maintained. This means users see the same graphically rich pages as designers do and know the precise article geometry.
Built-in collaboration and communication features
Through Articles XTensions software, articles can be created directly in QuarkXPress 7. The structure, meaning the article elements, like headline, lead-in, body text, picture, and caption, are defined in QuarkXPress.
The simplest way of collaboration entails handing over the QuarkXPress file to a QuarkCopyDesk user who simply opens that QuarkXPress project and edits the article. If a QuarkXPress project contains more than one article, the QuarkCopyDesk user is prompted and can choose which article he wants to edit. In such a serial workflow, one user works on an article at a time.
Parallel workflows — in which a group of people work on a layout and several articles simultaneously — are easy to achieve as well. In this case, every article is exported from QuarkXPress as a QuarkCopyDesk file. The QuarkCopyDesk user only gets those pages that contain a single article, including, of course, the same graphically rich pages as designers do. That way the designer keeps the layout, and each article can be edited by another writer.
Features and Benefits
Choose from three views
Using the WYSIWYG view, writers and editors have the opportunity to see the same graphic-rich pages that designers see. QuarkCopyDesk fully supports QuarkXPress colors, style sheets, and transparent text boxes.
Get precise information on how your copy fits in the layout. Choose the view you like best — Galley, Full Screen, or WYSIWYG — for viewing line counts, line breaks, and column breaks. QuarkCopyDesk continuously displays underset or overset amounts, word and line counts, and column depths. Not only does QuarkCopyDesk 7 show pictures in all three views, it even displays previews of images anchored in a text component in all three views.
View articles in split view and split your article view horizontally or vertically to display the content in Galley, Full Screen, and WYSIWYG at the same time. Content edited in one view updates in the other views simultaneously. The Split View feature even lets you display the different views of an article in different windows and supports working with two monitors perfectly.
Import and edit images in any format supported by QuarkXPress
Import any image format supported by QuarkXPress, including native Photoshop files, and use the same control and editing features as in QuarkXPress. After you import a picture, QuarkCopyDesk provides you with easy-to-understand controls in the context-sensitive Measurements palette.
QuarkVista technology enables you to perform advanced image-manipulation, such as Brightness, Contrast, Gaussian Blur and Despeckle.
Use Master Components to create an article’s geometry
With Master Components, the width, number of columns, and gutter width of any article component can be defined even before a QuarkXPress layout exists. This new QuarkCopyDesk feature is a significant improvement for any text driven workflows.
Use a proven and easy-to-use authoring environment
Writers, editors, and reviewers working in QuarkCopyDesk know the precise article geometry. When imported to the master QuarkXPress layout, their revised copy fits perfectly.
Electronic notes can be placed directly in the article text. Notes travel along with the article, even when it’s imported into QuarkXPress. You can improve your ability to track, implement, and archive feedback by copying and pasting edits, printing all Notes from a single document, and specifying custom Notes background colors.
Redlining simplifies edit tracking. Tracking changes with QuarkCopyDesk articles provides production teams with a clear record of any and all changes. Tracking changes also provides a new method for collaborative editorial communication — allowing you to view insertions and deletions made to an article, along with the details of who made each particular change.
QuarkCopyDesk 7 also contains filters for exchanging text easily with Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, XPress Tags, and other common word-processing formats.
Streamline your output process
Users familiar with QuarkXPress output styles appreciate the ability to combine their most common output setups into one output style for repeated use. Output Profiles and Output Profile Groups take this even further by allowing you to incorporate metadata into the output data stream using an internal placeholder framework. You can create output profiles for Print, PDF, and Article XML and combine them into output profile groups — allowing you to output to three different mediums with one mouse click.
Simple and easy authoring environment
Offering a simple and intuitive work environment, QuarkCopyDesk’s straightforward user interface puts you to work immediately instead of forcing you to figure out how to get started.
QuarkCopyDesk’s split view allows the user to have different visual presentations of an article — WYSIWYG, Galley, or Full-screen — in the same window, or in different windows, and always with a live-update on any changes made to the content.
Image support
Superior image-manipulation and display capabilities make QuarkCopyDesk the natural tool of choice for every edtor and writer who needs to control both text and picture content. After you import a picture, QuarkCopyDesk offers easy-to-use controls in the context-sensitive Measurements palette that let you crop, scale, rotate, and flip pictures horizontally or vertically.
Streamline your review workflow
Output Profiles and Output Profile Groups let you expedite your review and approval process enormously by enabling you to customize your output with metadata. Create output profiles with Output Enhancements for Print, PDF, and Article XML and combine them into output profile groups — allowing to output to multiple media with one mouse-click.
Improve your product and save money
Increased workflow efficiency gives writers more time to write and designers more time to design — inevitably creating a better product. And, ultimately, time saved through eliminating even minor inefficiencies results in greater profitability.
Other important features:
Master Components allows you to partly create an article’s geometry.
QuarkXPress is both Unicode and OpenType compliant.
