  • Platform: Universal

Learning JavaScript with Charles G. Hollins is a CD-ROM based workshop for HTML developers who wish to move from static to interactive Web development. Although JavaScript is primarily used to execute programming logic within the Web browser, the language has now become the industry standard for client-side programming. Thus, developers can apply their skills to Macromedia Flash, Adobe Acrobat and a variety of applications which support the JavaScript language.

The first part of this CD-ROM covers core JavaScript programming fundamentals such as literals, variables, expressions, operators, statements, functions and objects. In the second part of the workshop, you will learn how to use JavaScript's powerful objects to create pop-up windows, image rollovers and intelligent forms and frames; and perform event handling, browser detection, and client-side data storage and retrieval using cookies. Using these concepts and programming techniques, you will progressively enhance a static Web site that we have conveniently provided for you on the CD, and incorporate these features into the project. The workshop concludes with coverage of publications, sites, tools and resources that will enable you to develop faster and more effciently while enhancing quality and stability.

Topics Include:
• JavaScript Functions
• JavaScript Objects
• Understanding the Document Object Model
• Using Popup Alerts and the Status Bar
• Managing Browser Windows
• Capturing Events from the User
• Detecting the Browser and it Resources
• Managing Frames with JavaScript
• Accessing and Managing the Browser's History
• Working with Images
• Controlling Forms and Fields
• Storing and Retrieving User Information with Cookies

Problem: The movies do not paly after installing QuickTime from our CD and you are using Windows XP.
Solution: Some of our CD's have an installer which will install QuickTime 5.0.1.7. This does not work on some Windows XP systems. QuickTime 5.0.2 works as does 6.0. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ and download version 6.0 , uninstall 5.0.1.7 and reinstall the newer version.

Problem: Instability when using Mac OS X
Solution: If you are using Mac OS X, our CD-ROM will automatically run in the Classic Mode (System 9.2.2). If you experience problems with running in Classic Mode, it will be best to reboot in System 9 to view the tutorials. To do this go to the System Preferences (in the "apple" menu) and click on Startup Disk, choose the System 9.2.2 folder and restart your computer.

Problem: The movies won't play and you are using Windows and Internet Explorer 6.
Solution: Re-install QuickTime 5 (the installer is on the product disk).

Problem: QuickTime movies are only playing halfway and/or are crashing the computer.
Possible Solution: Check to see if you have "Beta QuickTime 5.0", if you do you will need to download version 5.0.2 and that should allow it to run properly.

Problem: The program asks you to "Insert Disc 1".
Possible Solution:
1. Verify that the disc is actually in the drive (the program will not run without the disc.)
2. If you have multiple drives, try the CD-ROM in the other drive.
3. If you have a CD-R drive: a: Turn off the CD-R drive and restart the computer; b: Try to run from the CD-R drive instead of the CD-ROM drive; c: Turn off your CD-R software reader extension (Toast is the most popular software program.)

Problem: The program will not open in a floating window instead of the full screen.
Possible Solution: Change the screen resolution to 1024x768 or higher.

Problem: The program will not run even with QuickTime downloaded or it crashes your Mac computer.
Possible Solution: Change your Extensions settings to MacOS Base: 1. Go to the Apple Menu, 2. Scroll down to "Control Panel", 3. Choose "Extension Manager", 4. Click the selected set menu bar to Mac OS Base.
