I lost my faith in the LaCie brand when they stopped using IBM brand drives, and I watched two different drives fail completely. I decided to take a chance with this one, since a friend of mine has two, and he travels hardily and extensively.
So far, it's been good to me. Mounts quickly from the 800 port (which is all I've used) and I haven't had any dropped audio (I record and mix ProTools sessions to it.)
My only practical concern (other than lack of drive brand disclosure) is how quickly is gets hot. Lack of heat dispersion can be a drive killer, so I'll be holding my breath for the next year or so, maintaining overly-regular backups, until this drive proves itself as reliable.
It would be nice if LaCie included an nifty anti-static travel pouch.

After just a month of using this drive the Firewire 800 port stopped working. I ordered it specifically for use of FW 800 and am now stuck with just another another USB/FW 400 drive. I have NOT contacted LaCie for a replacement, so I can't rate their customer service; only my disappointment with the product.

I was looking for a generic portable external hd to use with my macbook. My only requirement was firewire compatibility, so I would not have to use the usb ports. I found many hds with firewire interface in different capacities at different price points. The lacie all-terrain drive was a little on the expensive side at cost per GB but the rugged build appealed to me. It was surprisingly light and just the right size for travel. I have no regrets with this purchase.

i'm extremely happy with this hard drive. First of all, it's really cute so i enjoy looking at it. Secondly, it was so easy to set up, basically plug it in and go. it's light and portable and seems durable (it's new so i haven't dropped it yet). i bought the version with lower memory so i can back up data by project. when i need it, i will definitely get another one. very happy with my purchase. definitely recommend.

this external hard drive is excellent - and i would recommend it for anyone who needs to have access to their files across multiple platforms. i work with several different macs (at home and at work), and i occasionally need to use windows for 1 program. when i connected the LaCie external hard drive to my iMac, it walked me through a very easy setup procedure - and i partitioned the drive into a 280MB mac format, and a 40MB windows (Fat 32) format. the firewire 400 connection is very fast - virtually the same as accessing files using my internal hard drive. i consider this to be an excellent investment - i no longer need to coordinate which files i need to transfer from my computer to my flash drive so i can access them on another computer; i now take all of my files with me.

I live in New Orleans and I wanted to have a portable, rugged drive with a bootable back up of my computer that I could take with me for evacuations. I bought the LaCie Rugged 320gb specifically for that purpose. So i haven't used it alot but i didn't have any trouble doing the back up. It's super light and compact. The only thing i noticed is that it does get quite hot. I have a cooling fan set up in my office for my equipment so i just situated the drive near the fan. Based on my limited experience, I'd recommend this drive.
