MOUNTAIN HIGH MAPS is a unique collection of relief and outline maps of the world's continents, countries and ocean floors. To emphasize the relief of each image, land elevation has been exaggerated and, lit from strategic cardinal points, thereby giving the models a superior and more dramatic views than comparable satellite images. Engineered to professional cartographic standards and integrity, this flexible resource is designed for use by graphics and media users in a wide variety of applications. The clean uncluttered grayscale images provide a unique base map upon which organizations can establish their own house style and present their own information and messages.
APPLICATIONS: Mountain High Maps can be easily and quickly loaded into any desktop design, publishing, presentation, draw, paint, or image editing program providing the highest quality geographical representation of any part of the world. Using an appropriate image-editing program, you can manipulate and customize each map to your own requirements before output to imagesetter, laser, multimedia or video.

COMPATIBILITY: MOUNTAIN HIGH MAPS is published as a four disc CD-ROM set for Macintosh (HFS format) or a four disc set for PC / Unix / SGI (ISO 9660) computers. These relief map images are used with any software package that imports TIFF format files from a CD-ROM drive; the vector overlay maps may be used with application software that imports EPS or FreeHand format files. A typical minimum configuration will have at least 16 Mb of RAM, preferably 64 Mb - more memory will improve the speed of graphic image processing considerably.

All relief maps are provided in two different 8 bit gray scale resolutions, and three colorized views in 24 bit RGB High resolution grayscale and color images 300dpi TIFF/JPEG (Mac & Win) compressed Multimedia screen or low resolution images 72dpi JPEG (Mac) JPG (Win)
Relief map versions: Projection maps are provided in five versions; an ocean masked version with areas of water shown as a white mask; a second version without ocean mask showing continuous land and ocean floor relief contours; a corresponding one bit mask is used to delineate and manipulate the land and water areas of the relief maps. **Ocean floor versions are not available for China, Turkey, Korea, Wales & Indonesia. Three colorized projections maps are provided in JPEG for all views from the Mountain High maps collection and are presented as physical relief colorized as elevation and vegetation renderings, and relief with overlaying colorized political outlines.
Globe map versions: Globe projections are provided in three versions; relief globe with a white ocean mask, a corresponding version offers a one bit mask of the land / water outline for image manipulation. A third version offers strategically selected pre-colorized views. A variety of cloud overlay and background starfields are provided for optional special effects.
Outline map versions: Layers are presented in two versions: Illustrator and FreeHand. The layers palette provide the ability to switch on selective features within each map. Layers are available for: Box Rule - outline box in 1 point around the map that fits the corresponding Mountain High Map Individual countries in 0.25 point, all country borders in 0.5 point, country names, Coastlines in 0.25 point lines and white fills for lakes and inland water areas City locations, and city names totalling over 16,000 locations. Feature names, including land features, mountain ranges and peaks, oceans, bays and islands. Graticules of latitude and longitude Hydrography - river and tributary systems Linear scales in miles and kilometers Placed or Background Art, typically the layer used to place MHM relief maps
All outline “vector” paths in FreeHand and Illustrator formats are closed and filled. In addition all country outlines, oceans, land are supplied with filled tints allowing fast and efficient presentations maps to be generated. Land relief is pre-positioned with color applied and can be changed or replaced with colored relief maps as desired.
Under TIFF format, paths and separate files are provided for the layers itemized above. A separate TIFF mask file for each individual country contained within the coverage of each projection map is provided - in excess of 1,500 masks for the entire collection. Animation versions: Colorized globes are presented in a variety of animations, showing revolving globes, fly-pasts and other sequences using QuickTime for Macintosh and AVI and MOV files for Windows.
File sizes: The map and globe images occupy a full 4 CD-ROM set with a full uncompressed capacity of approximately 10 Gbytes. The grayscale high resolution maps range from 3 Mbytes to as high as 17 Mbytes uncompressed, averaging around 5 Mb grayscale and between 10 to 50 Mb in RGB. Individual map images differ in size, averaging around 2,000 to 2,500 pixels in height and width; the largest world map is sized at 5,500 x 3,500 pixels.
Map scales: Horizontal scales range from 1:250,000 up to 1:45,000,000, giving on the ground pixel resolution varying from 200 meters to 12 km. Typical resolution for European countries is 500 meters, for US 1,000 meters, continental views range from 3 km to 6 km. Vertical scales range from 1:50,000 to 1:1,000,000, with contour intervals varying from 50 to 1,000 feet. To emphasize relief, the elevation scales have been exaggerated 5 to 30 times. The maps use many projection systems including Mercator, Gall, Lambert's equal-area, conformal conic, simple conic and zenithal.
POLITICAL ACCURACY: MOUNTAIN HIGH MAPS Version 2.5 has been revised for all known and ratified political border decisions as of March 1997. The consulting authorities are the US Dept. of State and the International Border Resolution Unit (IBRU). A full list of unresolved border disputes is included in text form and appropriate Illustrator and FreeHand.
