The drive on my IMAC was jammed when my Granddaughter mistakenly slipped a S Card into it by error. Rather then lug my 27'' IMAC into a shop and lose it for days I bought this unit for the few times I ever need a DVD drive. I was really surprised at how easy it hooks up and how well it works and the software is really very very good. It also allows me to both play and burn CDS which the IMAC won't do. Since the nearest IMAC service is over an hour away and they have a huge back up this cheapie solution has really worked out very well so far.
I was disappointed with the quality of this product. It seemed to me to be of rather flimsy design and not engineered for user simplicity and control. It doesn't have a button for exjecting a disk and requires that you use the emergency ejection pinhole to release the tray. I was unable to get it to work with my iMac.
Had to buy this when I upgraded to a new MacBook that doesn't have a CD drive (like many new laptops). Needed to load older software that I had on CD. Plugged this in to the Mac USB, booted right up and worked without issue. Great price, seems like a sturdy unit.
It works great! Connects to my Mac Mini super easily and perfectly. However, it is much louder than I thought it was going to be. It makes sort of a scratchy noise, but it easy to ignore. Haven't tried burning anything on it, but I bought it to read DVDs and CDs and not to actually burn anything. For the price I paid for it (Black Friday at $22) it's fantastic. Don't know that I would be as happy if I paid full price for it--but it is a solid alternative to Apple's drive.
