I bought this drive to use with my MacBook Pro for a portable backup. I am taking a trip next week which will verify portability, which I don't expect to be an issue. I spent extra to get a Thunderbolt drive, because I want speed. It is fast: my last backup averaged 399.74 MB/s. I have watched burst speeds of over 2 GB/s. I have a 6G OWC SSD in my Mac, so I would suppose that the HDD in the Buffalo is a bit of a bottleneck, but that is OK when I balance the cost to the performance. Burst speeds of up to 10 GB/s are capable on Thunderbolt.

I purchased this drive to store my photos instead of putting them on my Mac Book Air. The drive is heavier than I expected and it runs a bit warm, but the speed is impressive. It is exactly what I needed as a companion to my MBA.

Very fast. But the 5400rpm drive cannot come close to saturating the Thunderbolt interface. Still a worthwhile purchase.

Greatly hard drive

Worked out of the box without needing to format the drive: my MacBook Pro recognized it immediately. Came with both USB and Thunderbolt cables. The drive looks like Apple designed it. It is MUCH faster than the USB 2.0 old drive I was using. I am very happy with it!

This drive came out of the box with both the USB and the Thunderbolt cables. I plugged the Thunderbolt cable into my MacBook Pro, wondering if I was going to have to format this thing, but no: my MacBook immediately recognized the drive and I simply started using it, no hassle or fuss at all. When I first navigated to the drive there was one file in the root directory called Manual.pdf which described how to format it and other stuff, but since my MacBook was already reading the drive I didn't see the need to format it, so I just shrugged and started copying files to it. I am no tech guru so I can't give you measured numbers, but the drive is MUCH faster than copying files using an old USB 2.0 drive I had been using. The Thunderbolt cable is pretty short, maybe a foot and a half long, but that was actually preferable for me since this is sitting next to my MacBook on my kitchen counter. The hard drive case looks like Apple designed it: very attractive brushed aluminum and grey plastic that looks like brushed aluminum. It looks completely at home sitting next to the brushed aluminum case of my MacBook Pro. I have become accustomed to Apple's "less is more" design philosophy, and this drive looks great, compared to some black garish drive. I am very happy with my purchase.
