Reviewed by Kenneth Nelson (2012-05-15) Apple 27" iMac Quad-Core Intel Core i7: Amazing with FCP-10 I have been a professional film and video producer for many years. There has been a learning curve as I transitioned from FCP-7 to FCP-10. Rather than select a MAC Pro tower, I decided to purchase a new iMac quad-4 with 16 GB Ram and a 250 GB solid state drive for my applications. I coupled this with two external 6TB Thunderbolt LaCie drives and a 1 TB internal drive. The results are astounding!.
Years ago I invested several hundred thousand dollars in a 1" master / 3-deck Beta SP system with a separate graphics and editing computer. I remember all of the difficulties in getting all of the equipment to "talk" with one another. What I have on my desk today replaces everything and for a mere fraction of the cost. And more than that, no errors, no dropped frames, real time playback, background rendering in literally seconds and a picture that will blow you away.
Editing is a joy. I am using a Canon 5D Mark III camera with input to the iMac through a Thunderbolt SD card reader. Some may resist change and cling to the old FCP-7 or similar software... but I assure you, I could not imagine anything better than what I am using now. Thanks to MacMall for the assistance they gave me. I trusted them and they delivered! I am simply thrilled with the possibilities. |

Reviewed by Ward Patterson (2012-05-01) Review of iMac 21.5" Quad Core I bought this iMac to replace an older iMac I had which finally just quit, and I am extremely pleased with the performance of the new one. I like almost every navigation feature of Mac OS Lion, and the Magic Mouse is superb! Obviously a wireless keyboard is also a big plus.
I was a little disappointed that I could not use Appleworks for word processing on this new machine. However, Office has a converter which opens all of my Appleworks documents and then saves them in office format. I was also able to convert and save my old spreadsheets using Office.
I highly endorse and recommend this machine in every way. |

Reviewed by Shawn Chambers(2012-04-15) 21.5" iMac Quad-Core i5-2.7Hz 4GB RAM iMac arrived in excellent shape within 3 days after shipped. My wife especially enjoyed the speed with which the computer reacted to searches and email. She loves the larger monitor.
Her old HP laptop had gotten to the point where it would take several times to pull up photographs, emails, etc., even though we had had both our sons who repair computers and work on them look at it. Neither is familiar with Apple computers but were impressed with its performance. Both also pointed out that a Microsoft PC system could have been purchased at a huge reduction in cost.
I've used apple computers since the early 1980's and personally wouldn't have anything else. I was replacing the 24 inch iMac and was faced with the great divide between the 21.5 inch and the 27 inch. Cost steered me to the 21.5 inch and it does seem a little cramped after the 24 inch. The 27 inch would have been luxurious in a usage sense, but also would have dominated the desk, and since I use two screens it was overkill.
The speed of the new mac is dizzying, but the other advancement that has me excited is the new smart mouse which utilizes the same touch technology of the iPhone and iPad. It’s a joy to use, everything goes faster. All in all a good value! |

Reviewed by Peter McDonald (2012-03-08) iMac: Best in Class Desktop Finally got the iMac! We were so excited to finally have it that when it arrived, all activities in the house stopped to focus on setting up the iMac. We moved it to the living room table and the kids were very eager to have the computer set up immediately so they could start using it. Once done, in about two minutes, they were watching Monster Inc.
The iMac looks like it would be our family computer for a while. Until I got the kids a Mac mini so I can use the iMac exclusively for myself. I really like using it. The screen is awesome in all its glorious 27 inches. The graphics are crisp and beautiful. I think I’d just add a decent sound system and I’d get myself an office theater, you know, a place I can watch DVDs and movies in between works.
Apart from being an entertainment system, the iMac works really well for every computing needs required in the household. I installed iWork and the kids seem okay with it. I think maybe it’s the word processor that I’m going to use as well. Keynote looks especially powerful and intuitive. The only downside is that the kids wouldn’t be able to play their PC games. I’m planning to install Parallels or maybe not if they found other games for Mac.
For the build quality, I’d give the iMac a 10 out of 10. The idea of an all-in-one computer is really nice. It’s freed up our desk from clutter and although wireless to some extent, the performance still rocks! |

Reviewed by Mike(2012-02-18) iMac review I'm a newbie to Mac and Apple. I purchased my first Mac (MacBook Pro 15") less than a year ago. Since then I have purchased an iMac 27" for home, and a MacBook Pro 15" - iMac 27" for my office. My switch was due to my 30+ years of enduring the Microsoft fiasco with constant updates, reboots, security flaws, quirky functionality, and lack luster OS upgrades. While I stay near the cutting edge of computer technology, I had an occurrence where I needed create an 8'x10' full resolution graphic for a trade show display. My Quad-Core 8GB Windows 7 PC couldn't pull it off using Photoshop CS5. At the time I carried my then new MacBook Pro to my office to work with as I could. I decided to give the MacBook Pro i5 - 4GB a shot and to my expectance the job completed without a hitch. That sold me on Macs!
I have found the iMac to be light years ahead of any high-end desktop PC I have ever owned. People can clock speeds, benchmark hardware all they want. It's not the same nor a fair comparison. The OS and user interface is where the true comparisons are relevant in regards to overall performance!!! If 5 years ago anyone told me I would be using Macs today they wouldn't have gotten a pleasant response.
The iMac is a great computer in the 2011 state. Hopefully I'm wrong but I see (based on rumors of the 2012 iMac release) Apple wanting to build a gap between iMac and Mac Pro computers. The two product lines are comparable in performance when considering the lower spectrum of Mac Pros and with the difference in cost. The iMac is a winner in that respect. Not to mention the compact design and no additional monitor costs. |
