MacBook, the consumer-focused notebook among the three, was designed and manufactured for the education markets. It sports entry-level specs and an affordable price range. In July of 2011, the MacBook was discontinued in favor of the MacBook Air.

With its all-flash storage and lightweight durable design, the MacBook Air is Apple’s entrant to the ultraportable division of laptop computers. It is available in 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch models, and weighs as little as 3lbs. Despite its size, the MacBook Air boasts of providing the same high level of performance and battery life as those in laptops twice its weight. It’s the perfect everyday computer for individuals needing a dependable and mobile companion.

MacBook Pro is at the high end of MacBook computers. Equipped with high-performance processors, powerful graphics, and extended battery life, the MacBook Pro is powerful workhorse. It also has a stunning Retina display that easily matches the screen resolution of HDTVs, high-speed Thunderbolt ports for fast data transfer, and a sleek aluminum unibody frame, making it a favorite among professionals needing a powerful computer wherever they go.

Worth the upgrade

I wanted to upgrade from my 2nd generation MacBook Pro but I didn't particularly need the Retina Display, so I went with this 13.3" MacBook Pro instead. I've been using it everyday for business for about a month now and I'm really enjoying the speed and strength of the dual-core i5 processor. The various ports on the laptop also makes it incredibly easy to connect my hard drives to it. I also love that I can quickly connect a second monitor to this MacBook Pro, for those times when I just need more screen real estate. But I have to withhold a star for two things. The laptop's glossy display doesn't do very well under glare, so it's too reflective to use outdoors. This MacBook Pro also seems heavier than my previous laptop, so I can't really carry it around as much as I want to.

Wish I had bought one sooner

I had been toying with the idea of getting a MacBook Pro for about 15 months and eventually took the plunge. I am glad I did and I also wish I had done it sooner. This particular version matches my 2006 Mac Pro in terms of speed. The anti-glare screen is every bit as good as the monitor I use with the Mac Pro.

I work a lot on processing photographs and I do not find the smaller screen to be that much of a disadvantage and the portability of the MacBook Pro far outweighs the reduction in screen real estate. I am going to be on the move for the next few months and the MacBook Pro means I can work just as if I was at my Mac Pro.

In my opinion this MacBook Pro is better than those equipped with retina displays. Just think how much a 1TB flash drive would cost. It also comes equipped with a firewire port so I can hook up my external hard drives. It really does tick all the boxes for me. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase and choice of model, which was attractively priced by the store. I would strongly recommend this model to anyone heavily into image processing and photography.

From a first-time Mac user

This is easily one of the best laptops I've ever used, if not the best. I was never a big fan of MacBooks until I started using this 15.4" MacBook Pro with Retina Display a couple of weeks ago. This MacBook's quad-core, i7 processor and 8 GB, 1600 MHz RAM capacities handle performance-intensive apps and software without any glitches. I can do five hours of photo and video editing without this MacBook Pro lagging.

Of course, the Retina Display is a dream for any laptop user (like me) who puts a premium on screen resolution and graphic quality. OS X Mountain Lion was surprisingly easy to use and intuitive, so I didn't encounter any problems getting used to Mac OS. I'd recommend this laptop to anyone making the switch from PC to Mac.

Macbook Pro 15.4" w/ Retina Display

Had a house full of Dell's, and had a terrible experience recently, and after buying both my daughters MacBook Pro's for school, decided to "upgrade" myself. Bought the high end machine with 16 GB RAM and largest SSD, and am happy to say this is by far and away the finest laptop I have ever owned (so far). Everything about it (portability, processor speed, ability to multi-task, etc.) has been amazing.

Even as a desktop replacement, don't miss the larger screen (have not set up a docking station yet) and love being able to take it anywhere in the house instead of being glued to my desk. This is an amazing machine and I highly recommend it. Price is a little stiff, but you get what you pay for. Expect to have this thing as my main home machine for a long time.

One challenge - I am a longtime "power user" of Quicken (for home), and I found the Mac OS version (Quicken Essentials) to be completely inadequate for our needs, so just installed Parallels 8 and went back to the PC version. Works seamlessly so far. Very impressive.

Great, solid machine

This machines is solid, the 16GB of RAM makes it soar through anything you throw at it. It shows even in booting up and shutting down. The Flash hard drive makes opening large files smooth and fast. It's awesome coming from a 7-year-old Core Duo MacBook. It may be a bit overkill for what I'm going to be using it for, but it's absolutely amazing. It will be nice to get back into photo editing as my old machine didn't handle it well at all.

If you're on the fence about getting so much RAM or the bigger hard drive, after reading other reviews- keep in mind that they're soldered on and not user replaceable. Made it a no-brainer for me.

The store also contacted me with free expedited shipping w/ Applecare purchase, something I was going to get anyway, so I got it the next day for free!

A Lovely Computer!

Bought this to replace my old MacBook, which finally ran out of gas after 7 good years. I have to say the transition to this new MacBook has been wonderful. The SSD makes it so fluid, responsive and fast, and the graphics just pop off that retina display. Beautiful stuff! And compared to my older MacBook this one feels like a MacBook Air! It's so light and compact it's really hard to believe it's a MacBook and not a MacBook Air. And this MacBook has a bigger hard drive and faster processor than the Air so I think it's well worth the bit of extra bulk you get with this model.

If there is any downside, I wish I could have afforded a bigger hard drive as I'm sure I'll fill up the 256GB I have before too long. It also would have been nice to have a DVD drive, but then again the one on my old MacBook stopped working about 4 years ago so I'm pretty used to not having one. Still, I am old school and like to burn CDs to listen to in the car rather than using the iPod in the car (which can be really dangerous!).

Despite the two minor complaints, overall I am extremely happy with this computer. Highest recommendation!!!

MacBook Pro: Great Product!

Have just switched to Mac from Windows at my home. Used to be a Mac user back in the day but switched to PC years ago to be compatible with my corporate computing environment. Now that I am retired I am switching back to Mac based on experiences of trusted friends.

So far there have been no significant problems. I am running Windows 7 using Parallels so I can use Quicken and some stock market analysis programs that run only on Windows, but for everything else I am using Mac software. It took me a little while to get used to the differences between Windows and Mac, but nothing to complain about. I moved files from the PC to the Mac manually using a flash USB drive to be sure all of my files ended up in the right places.

The Mac is pretty fast and so far I have not had any problems that I could not solve on my own. I love the big screen and the zoom feature of trackpad. I definitely recommend this product!

MacBook Pro + Retina: The best Mac ever

The 2012 MacBook Pro is the best Mac I have ever seen and used. The exterior looks sharp and solid. Nothing much has really changed externally. It’s the same unibody design with the backlit keyboards and island-style keys. The CD slot has been dropped like in the MacBook Air. What’s changed is that the new MacBook Pro with Retina display is thinner and lighter than the previous generation of MBP.

Inside is where much of the upgrade happened. First, the graphics. I absolutely love it. The Retina display produces vibrant images on the entire 15-inch screen real estate. It’s wonderful to watch. I truly enjoy watching HD movies. You get to appreciate the screen more if you work on photos and movies, which I do by the way. The new MacBook Pro with Retina gives my profession a very nice and powerful tool.

As for processing power, the machine is by far the best that I have ever seen. Quad-core i7, all-flash, HD Graphics 4000. You couldn’t have asked for a better notebook. It’s fast and responsive. Even with the Lion OS, which has not been developed with the new MacBook Pro in mind, the notebook works seamlessly. I’m now excited waiting for Mountain Lion and see what it has to offer in unlocking the potential of the new MBP.

2012 MBP with Retina Display: Another Masterpiece

This is by far the best work from Apple yet, hands down. The screen is brilliant, its shockingly powerful for a laptop, especially given I'm a Business user that runs 20-30 resource intensive apps and a windows VM at once.

The design and form is fantastic, very sleek and even keeps trim enough to resemble its slimmer brother the Macbook Air.

In the retina version of the pro, the superdrive is gone. But given that CDs are literally dying out and the cost of flash storage is cheap there’s not a lot to complain about. If you "had" to make CDs you can always get an external USB drive to fit the occasion, or you could not do your research, buy one, be mad and badmouth apple.

I am extremely happy with this. CD's are dying, Apple is embracing that. Good job on another outstanding product.

Pleased with MacBook Air 11 inch

; I finally upgraded from my 5-year-old Core Duo MacBook, so it was inevitable that I'd be impressed with this new Apple hardware. My favorite features in no particular order:

1."Instant" on/ wake from sleep. Never more than 6-8 seconds

2. Nice resolution for a 13" screen

3. Very low battery drain while in sleep mode

4. Battery life. 7 hours may be a stretch, but easily getting 5-6 hours of casual use out of each charge

5. Backlit keyboard is a killer feature

6. Saving north of $100 between sales tax and Apple Insider affiliate link.

The only negative I can report is that when I first received my MacBook Air, there seemed to be uneven brightness in backlight along the bottom edge of the screen. It's either gone away or I don't notice anymore.

One Fine MacBook Air

This is the ultimate ultraportable. If you need a lightweight computer with a full-featured OS and and long battery life, this is the MacBook Air to get. It is so convenient to use away from your usual desk. In my case I use it in our school library and in cafes sometimes and it feels very right. I just get it out of the sleeves and that's it. The experience has been so much better with my older PowerBook where I needed to lug around a mouse and a charger.

Performance-wise, I'm impressed. I see what Apple has done in new generations of iPod touch, iPhone and iPad. The speed of the MacBook Air is of the same class as those idevices. And to think that the MacBook Air has a desktop-grade OS!

Also, very nice to see backlit keyboards make its way back to the 2011 MacBook Air. That's what I've been waiting for before I upgrade from a PowerBook to a MacBook Air. Thankfully it has returned.

As for the price, I can't say that the Air is cheap. But the price is definitely well worth the performance, convenience, and possibilities that the MacBook Air could offer IMO.
