Mac Pro

See what’s next for pro computing with the new Mac Pro. Every component that makes the Mac Pro fast and powerful has been fully optimized for state-of-the-art performance. Engineered around workstation graphics with dual GPUs, PCI Express-based flash storage, new-generation Xeon processors, and an ultrafast memory, the new Mac Pro packs an unprecedented amount of power in an unthinkable amount of space.

Mac Pro
Lowest Price: $2,839.99 Highest Price: $9,399.00
Average User Rating: 4.6 out of 5 based on 34 customer reviews

Built around the new-generation Intel Xeon E5 chipset, the new Mac Pro offers up to 12 cores of processing power, up to 40GB/s of PCI Express gen 3 bandwidth, and 256-bit-wide floating-point instructions. It sports a four-channel DDR3 memory controller running at 1866MHz, two workstation-class GPU with up to 12GB of dedicated VRAM, and a next-generation PCI Express flash storage that is two times faster than the fastest SATA-based solid-state drive.

With all its power, the Mac Pro will never be at a loss for speed even while doing the most computing-intensive tasks, such as editing a full-resolution 4K video and simultaneously rendering effects in the background while having enough power to connect up to three 4k monitors.

What makes all the innovations in the new Mac Pro possible is yet another innovation: a unified thermal core. Rather than using multiple heat sinks and fans to cool down the components, the new Mac Pro uses a single piece of extruded aluminum that maximizes airflow and conducts heat away from the CPU and GPUs. Apple Insider quotes Apple in saying that “the use of the extruded aluminum structure was key in achieving such a compact design.” This structure is also critical in the Mac Pro’s quieter performance and provides the basis for the Mac Pro’s all-new cylindrical chassis.

Connectivity options in the new Mac Pro are as myriad as they are advanced. “Thunderbolt 2 is the main draw here, with the protocol able to support 20Gbps throughput, up to six daisy-chained peripherals per port and backward compatibility with current Thunderbolt hardware,” says Apple Insider. This versatile I/O technology allows the new Mac Pro to play well, among others, with high-capacity storage devices, PCI expansion chassis, and the latest external monitors — including 4K desktop displays.

Rounding up the list of I/O connections in the new Mac Pro are USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet ports, and a HDMI 1.4 port. For wireless connectivity, it’s got the latest three-stream 802.11ac Wi-Fi and a Bluetooth 4.0. It’s everything at high speed.

New Mac Pro

I know that the Mac Pro is aimed at graphics professionals, which I am not. But I gave in to the temptation to give it a whirl anyway. My career is teaching college courses online using various Learning Management Systems provided via Instructure (Canvas) and Labyrinth Learning (eLAB). As such, I run multiple browsers with currently 34 tabs open between the two. Also open are 2 e-mail programs plus three Office 2011 apps as well as the normal iTunes, Messages, and Stickies. These I leave running 24/7 and switch between them often. When I click on anything, it results in automatic switching, no pause, no waiting, it's just there and ready to go.

This Mac Pro is beautiful, fast, and except for the fact that it's responding and displaying on my Dell 27" U2713HM (essentially 2K) monitor, I don't even know it's running. There's no heat, no fan sound, nothing... it just runs fast. The only sound comes from the AirPort Time Capsule when it spins up for a backup.

I am thrilled with this computer and am looking for a long relationship, so to speak, with it. By the way, it replaces a 17" MacBook Pro, late 2011, which was the top model with 8GB RAM. It will replace my wife's much older MacBook Pro. Even though the MacBook Pro is fast, this Mac Pro runs circles around it!

I am one satisfied customer.

A monster of a machine

It’s common for desktop computers to be referred to as ’boxes,’ but that term doesn’t apply to the new Mac Pro. It’s a compact cylinder and is packed with tech.

I am not a systems person. But I am impressed when I can run a session of Pro Tools, a Windows 8 virtual machine, a Linux virtual machine, and miscellaneous browsers, email, and Acrobat and Office programs, and activity monitor shows I’ve used only 20 percent of its processing power. Maybe the impression relates to my moving up from a Mac Mini to a six-core, 16G of memory, 256G SSD machine.

It does not even get warm. A slight draft of warm air comes up from the center but the casing itself is cool to the touch. The design engineers outdid themselves. Plenty of connections, including a USB 3 bus. I have two monitors connected, one through the HDMI port and the other through a DVI-to-miniport connector that plugs into a Thunderbolt port. I don’t do graphic-intensive or video work, so I can’t comment on its speed for those tasks.

The one issue I had was that units shipping immediately had only 256G SSD drives. Larger ones up to 1T can be ordered for later delivery. Migration assistant did not work because it stops if the sending machine has more files than the receiving machine can store. This meant re-installing programs, which is tedious though fast on this machine. I made more disk space by attaching a 256G external SSD through a Thunderbolt port. Blackmagic speed tests show the drive writing speed at 320Mps and it maxes out the gauge for read speed, which means it’s reading faster than 500Mps. Wow. The internal drive is faster, of course, but this is plenty fast. I used the external drive to record four simultaneous 24/88 audio files with Pro Tools and not a hiccup.

Is it worth the $4,000? Well, that’s up to individual users. I can say I am delighted by the machine. An interesting side-note is that a computer magazine tried to estimate the ’Apple tax’ in the Mac Pro by pricing what its hardware would cost if bought separately for a Windows machine. The answer: the hardware cost more than what Apple is charging, which is skewed because the Mac Pro comes as a machine and the parts would be just parts. The ’Apple tax’ for this machine in fact is a refund to users. Thanks, Apple.

Amazing Workstation A+

We were fortunate enough to get one of the first shipping units (a big thanks to this store!!) and all I can say is WOW. We were using a 2010 Mac Pro with lots of upgrades (GTX Card, 32G Ram, 6 Core 3.33 GHZ processor and a 4-drive internal Raid 0 - it was fast, but still lagged in disk performance and I/O.

The 2013 Mac Pro is a monster in the I/O department. We also purchased a Promise Pegasus2 R4 until (8TB Raid 5). Performance is off the charts. Disk I/O using Blackmagic was in the high 300s on the old Mac Pro, the new one is 600+ on the internal SSD and about 800 on the Promise RAID.

We use the new machine for video, Photoshop, renders etc. Final Cut and Motion performance is 100% better, Photoshop is about 40% better and we are just getting the workstation tuned.

Once the price of RAM drops, we will upgrade it to 32GB - and that should improve it further.

GeekBench scores on our old, highly upgraded Mac Pro were 15,400 (very respectable for a 2010, 6-core unit) the New Mac Pro is over 20,000 The benchmark scores do not give a complete picture of just how fast this machine is.

It truly is a work of art and perhaps the fastest desktop computer ever offered for the price. In the past our Silicon Graphics and Sun workstations did not have as much power. Apple hit it OUT of the park on this one. Buy it!! You will not be disappointed in any way.

Finally, unless you are doing extensive multi-stream video - you don’t need to buy anything over 6 cores. Most apps only use 1-4 cores and those processors actually have BETTER single core performance than the 8 and 12 core configurations. So if you are using Photoshop more than Final Cut or Premier Pro - go with the 4 or 6 core and save the $$ !

Absolutely worth the wait

I’ve wanted to upgrade to the newest Mac Pro ever since it was announced at the WWDC this year. One of the biggest improvements, for me, was of course the new design. The old Mac Pro was pretty sleek, but the now it’s got none of that bulkiness. My new Mac Pro is smaller than I had anticipated but that worked out great for me because now I have more desk space.

Performance-wise, this Mac is hands-down the fastest computer I’ve owned yet. I’ve just finished transferring hundreds of GBs’ worth of data from assorted MBPs and external HDs and it didn’t slow down once during the process. I was able to open up my heaviest projects on FCPX in a matter of seconds. I didn’t even know it was possible to breeze through encoding and rendering, like the newest Mac Pro did.

This Mac Pro’s got a lot of I/O ports and I like that it’s easy to swing it around for those shorter-than-average cables. The abundance of Thunderbolt ports is probably one of my most favorite things about this Mac. Six Thunderbolt ports mean that I can daisy-chain several devices to my Mac, even when I have more than one display hooked up. This is excellent for people like me who need to access more than 2 external HDs at a time.

2013 Mac Pro, quad core, 16GB RAM, 1TB storage

I decided to use our corporate account to get the base model of the newest Mac Pro with additional configurations so I have 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, since our graphic design group is expecting to tackle a lot of projects this year.

After we set up our new Mac, we tested its capabilities in streaming 4K video and we weren’t disappointed. Our 4K videos played without a hitch and there was no detectible lag at all. FCPX, Adobe CS6 for Mac, and Adobe CCT all work smoothly, probably thanks to the dual-GPU setup. The 256GB of onboard storage just wasn’t enough for our small office’s needs, so I got an external Thunderbolt 2 RAID (Promise Pegasus2 8TB) to supplement our newest Mac Pro’s storage. Both devices seem to be working perfectly for each other. In fact, the Mac Pro immediately detected the Pegasus2 when the RAID was plugged in, and setup was a breeze.

Excellent workstation

Both my husband and I are graphic designers and videographers, so we heavily rely on our computers to get the job done. My three-year-old Dell just could not keep up in terms of performance, so I decided to go with a Mac Pro that my husband and I can use for our major projects. I’ve been reading a lot of positive reviews online.

Right now I’m the main user of the Mac Pro and I’m very satisfied with its performance so far. Setting up my old ViewSonic monitor with the desktop took barely any time at all, though it took me a couple of days’ practice to get the hang of the Mac OS X UI. OS X Mountain Lion is incredibly responsive and stable, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced an application crash since I started using the Mac Pro almost a month ago. The Mac Pro can significantly render videos more quickly, thanks to its 3.2GHz processor and 6GB RAM. Tasks that would take my old Dell an hour to complete would be finished on the Mac Pro in under half an hour.

One of my favorite things about the Mac Pro is its easy-access components. My husband has to use the Mac Pro for major projects so all he has to do is attach his hard drive to the drive carrier and slide the carrier into place, so he can readily access his work.

Mac Pro Server – surpasses expectations

We recently bought the quad-core Mac Pro server for our small office and it’s surpassed all of my expectations so far. This Mac Pro was our first choice for many reasons – the most important of which is that each of this server’s components, from memory to hard drives, can be accessed within seconds and without tools. This would make it extremely easy for us to upgrade the system in the future. This server is also a great size, so it’s the perfect fit for our small office.

The Server software has also been a joy to use, especially after I upgraded to OS X Server. I’m enjoying the Profile Manager, in particular – we’re a team of Apple fanatics and we bring quite a lot of iOS devices and MacBooks to work each day. As IT administrator, I don’t even have to supervise device registration and integration for each device used by our team. Once the devices are registered, users can access the self-service portal and download settings I’ve specified for their devices, no muss, no fuss.

Great for graphics work

I’m part of a small web design and video production group and this Mac Pro is our latest investment. We all have reliable MacBooks, but even our best MB’s can’t keep up with the Mac Pro. This computer can open our largest files in a matter of seconds. On this Mac, we can simultaneously render videos on Final Cut Pro and create dozens of templates on Photoshop and Illustrator. We’ve never really enjoyed that kind of convenience before, so we really appreciate the productivity boost.

Right now, four of us take turns using the Mac Pro for each of our really big projects, so it’s great that hard drives can be easily removed and slotted into place at the back of this computer. The dual superdrives also come in handy for burning DVDs for our clients.

2012 Mac Pro

I was able to finish remodeling my home office a couple of months ago, so I got the space needed for the computer I wanted – the 2012 Mac Pro. I upgraded from a PowerMac, and while that was fast and reliable, I couldn’t believe how much faster the Mac Pro was. Even in the original configuration I bought it in, I could open my lengthiest and highest-quality mixes in a matter of seconds, and simultaneous rendering and playback didn’t even slow it down.

One of the things I looked forward to the most was upgrading my Mac Pro. A couple of weeks ago I upgraded my Mac Pro to 32GB RAM, installed an additional ATI RADEON card, and swapped the hard drives for Samsung 830 series 512 GB SSDs for even more speed. The entire upgrade process took me less than an hour to complete and now I’m really enjoying the way my Mac Pro zips through any task I put it to.

Indispensable computer for our office

I and a friend run a relatively small but extremely well-loved studio offering photo & videography services. In the past couple of months, we’ve enjoyed a huge surge of clients requesting photo & video documentation for weddings and corporate events, so we decided that a Mac Pro would be a wise investment. We’ve been using our trusty iMac for about three years, but we decided to retire it before it completely died out on us.

This 12-core Mac Pro is the main computer we now use to edit photos and videos. I honestly don’t know how I survived rendering videos and editing photos on our old iMac, when this Mac Pro takes about half an hour to render a 30-minute video. Opening a 50 MB photo takes a couple of seconds, at most. We’ve also taken advantage of the slide-in hard drive bays, which are a godsend for people who don’t really deal well with cables and connectors and things like that but really need the additional hard drive space.

This computer’s amazing performance has really helped us work through our clients’ requests more quickly, which of course leads to better business for us.

Excellent for high-performance use

I do round-the-clock consultant work for various clients, so I really needed a workstation that could keep up with the constant operation of RAM-hungry applications. My Mac Pro hasn’t let me down since I started using it a month ago. In fact, I think this Mac makes software run even more quickly and smoothly. Web browsing has also been a lag-free experience, no matter how many browsers and tabs I have open.

My favorite thing about my Mac Pro is the fact that it’s practically designed for convenient upgrading. All components of this desktop, from the hard drives to the RAM to the optical drive, are easy to access and remove as needed. I’m already looking forward to my first upgrade; I’ve been hearing a lot about the hassle-free installation of additional drives and RAM.

Got my money's worth

Recently bought this Mac Pro as an early birthday gift to myself and I'm happy to say that I got value for my money. Performance-wise, this Mac Pro is probably the most responsive workstation I've ever used. No lags or crashes at all with any programs. The greatest thing about it is that its components are modular and quite nicely arranged, so everything is accessible. I didn't encounter any problems upgrading to 16GB RAM from Kingston. Looking to add a secondary hard drive and I'm not anticipating any problems with that either.

Very impressed with this computer. It is superfast and very capable. I can open large image files for editing and it's ready in seconds. There is no lag. No hang. And definitely no freezing of the screen. Everything feels streamlined and you will see that the Mac Pro is tough and powerful when you use it.

As for the build quality, the Mac Pro looks sturdy and polished. As in any computer Apple, this Mac has an air of completeness in it like all the details of the design and build has all been taken care of. It's a nice machine on the outside and complements its computing capabilities.

Inside, the Mac Pro is reliable. It operates quietly and you will know it is working good. It's amazing how Apple was able to build this kind of machine. This is how every desktop has to be: powerful and with small footprint.

Mac Desktop Pro versus Dell Precision T7500

I recently compared our newly acquired Apple Mac Pro Two-2.66GHZ Six-Core Intel Xeon Westmere (12 cores), 32GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5770 to our Dell Precision T7500, 2.00GHz E5504 (2 processors), 24GB RAM, NVIDIA Quadro FX 5800. Though it is not a clear "Apples to Apples" comparison, but rather an "Apple (Mac) to Dell" comparison :-). Okay, I will leave the comedy to others. I am not, by any means saying the comparison was even, I made any adjustments I could in making the comparison.

I took the exact same Adobe Premiere Pro project and loaded the project on each machine. 3GB of RAM is required to allocate to other programs; so since the Dell had 24GB of RAM only 21GB could be used for Premiere Pro. Accordingly, I adjusted the RAM allocation of the Mac Premiere Pro project to 21GB to make the comparison as far as possible--again, for the tecnho geeks...I realize the processors in the Mac are 2.66GHz compared to the 2.00 GHz processors in the Dell and the video cards are different. However, this is real world and I have, what I have.

Okay, back to the comparison. I set up each project for each computer and fully rendered the project, prior to sending the project to be compiled into its given format (e.g., FLV, MOV, MP4, MP3, etc). Once each project was ready to encode, I clicked OK and started the timer. the Mac Pro beat the Dell in every comparison by 31% or greater; with that being the .MOV format.

I almost see this like a "Toy Story" moment. my Dell is "Woody," a good friend forever. Useful and dependable. Whereas my Mac Pro is "Buzz Lightyear," shiny and new. I think I am going to keep them both--after all, you cannot have too many friends!

Mac Pro: Solid piece of equipment

I upgraded from a pretty fast G5, so I wasn't expecting too much of a difference. But when it came to trying out the Mac Pro I ordered from MacMall, I was really impressed with the speed and performance of the machine! I am a professional photographer and work with large image files. I can open a 300 megabyte 24x36" TIFF Photoshop file in a second!

The Mac Pro also runs really quiet; the only noise coming from the machine is my external hard drive sitting on top of it. I like the smoothness of everything that’s in the computer. I figure that kind of quietness can only come from the ease by which the Mac Pro handles every task you throw at it.

As for the build quality, the Mac Pro is like a tank and is worth every penny. And with the ability to easily upgrade its components, I'll have this machine for a very long time. Consider it an excellent product and does all I need to do. It is fast, relatively quite and very efficient. Not much else to tell you, works as well as advertised and perhaps even better. The expandability of the Mac Pro is to me the main reason to get it. The ability to run four internal drives or add the Apple RAID card and huge amount of memory allows a greater range of performance and expandability over the iMacs. Performance is excellent! I made the right decision.

The TurboBoost technology created by Apple is a sight to behold. It starts up the Mac Pro in just a couple of seconds. Very fast, very streamlined, and everything works well together. The quad-core of my Mac Pro is very dependable. I could run multiple programs at no noticeable decrease in speed. Going from one program to another is a breeze. Searching for files in the 1TB drive is also fast, as well as transferring them to thumb drives and other external storage. I just wish though that this has been equipped with Thunderbolt.

Add a very capable graphics card to the quad core Mac Pro and you get a really efficient machine. The two just work well together to create a user experience that is unmatched in any desktop I have ever tried.

Mac Pro 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Xeon Nehalem

While shopping and doing my research I noticed the 2011 iMac models nearly reaching a Mac Pro level of parts specs and performance. I asked our IT and he was friendly enough to walk me through the difference between the two units. On the surface, the newer iMacs can indeed match up with Mac Pros, but the IT guy opened my eyes to the possibilities in a Mac Pro that is not available in the iMac.

It is easy to upgrade a Mac Pro and make it grow with you as new technology comes along. Our IT guy said this to me and took it with a grain of salt. When I got the Mac Pro from MacMall I found out the truth in what he said. The expansion bays in the Mac Pro looks unintimidating for a non-technical person like me to upgrade the system. It looks like it has ample room for what technology will have new in 10 years or so. It's unbelievable how Apple exerted effort into this tiny detail.

That is the biggest factor I was considering: a computer that will be able to last for a long long time. Not in terms of durability. God knows Apple computers are tough. But in terms of fighting obsolescence. The iMac, unfortunately, doesn't look it. The Mac Pro does, and may be the reason why among all things Mac, the Mac Pro is the longest to withstand a refresh.

Mac Pro 8-Core Computer!

Very excited to get the Mac Pro I ordered. It arrived in good condition 3 days after I was charged by my credit card company. The packaging looked secure and everything was in order. As for the Mac Pro, it sits snugly on an Apple carton and nothing seemed amiss when I opened it.

The first time I used the Mac Pro I was blown away. An 8-core computer is a thing to behold. It's got lots of punch inside the case. The graphics are phenomenal. I never seen my old Apple LED looked so bright and crisp before. The performance is just as good. Everything loads quick and easy, while the unit stays there comfortably like it does not mind any processing requirement you throw at it.

For the price, I think it is just right to have that kind of performance. It's a bit on the pricey end, but worth every penny in my opinion. Should you need a fast machine with an enterprise-grade computing power, you won't go wrong with the Mac Pro.

Wonderfully built Mac. Lovely LED screen.

Very happy with the Mac Pro. Got the quad-core Nehalem processor and an Apple LED display. It’s stunning. Watching movies on the LED is a wonderful experience, and so is computing of course. The huge screen seems to accommodate more windows than it actually could. The high-resolution LED packs more pixels than any monitor-and-desktop tandem. The result is fast, clean and organized desktop computing experience.

The Mac Pro does well as an entertainment PC and productivity desktop. The OS is great and seems to work well with the hardware this fast. The result is that simple computing, like numbers and pages and keynote and Web browsing, is a breeze. While programs with high graphics and processor requirements are very easy to use.

As for the build quality, it’s wonderful as all things Apple are. The build is well polished and looks classy. It’s almost self-effacing in its design, which is a good thing because it doesn’t get in the way when you use it. You will know what it is capable of not by just looking at it, but by using it.

What a Deal!

My previous Mac Pro was a 2 year old 8 core 2.8ghz with 20gb of ram so I was not hurting for performance. But, since most of my day to day apps were not using multiple cores, the 2.93ghz wrapped up in a brand new box was attractive. Looking at the current generation, I was disappointed that there was no native HDMI out (or in) and it was still on SATA II. When this close-out sale came up it was too good to pass up. I like having 2 Superdrives and I can double the ram as needed, but so far it is not an issue. If the next gen has SATA III and/or LightPipe, I will be there, but until then, I'm not hurting at all.

A great bargain

This is a great bargain and worth the premium over the $1700 2.66 model in order to get a bigger HD, more RAM, a better video card, a 2nd DVD drive and built-in wi-fi. I received mine quickly and cannot believe how fast and quiet it is. As a 2009 model, it does not have all the latest stuff, though. The keyboard is the old wired "chiclet" with the mimetic keypad. The mouse is the MightyMouse and not the Magic Mouse. I didn't care since I use my own keyboard and mouse. Snow Leopard was not installed but is included as a "drop-in" DVD. So is iLife 11. As expected updating it was a cinch. I removed the bare drives from all my external cases and plugged them into the Mac Pro easily. It usually to longer to open the drive's external case than it did to open the Mac Pro and plug it in. I used the cost savings to also add an SSD, which I highly recommend if you value speed. With it the Mac Pro boots in about 10 seconds! Highly recommended! Thanks, MacMall!
