Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Integrating the Mac into an Exchange 2007 Environment

With the introduction of Snow Leopard, Mac OS X now has out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, something even Windows doesn’t have. Everything your users need is included in Snow Leopard and no additional software is required. Rather than using Outlook to access Exchange services such as email, calendar, and the Global Address List, your users will access them with Mail, iCal, and Address Book. They can send and receive Exchange messages and accept and decline meetings right from their inboxes; access Exchange calendars and view free/busy information to schedule meetings; and find contacts instantly by searching the Global Address List—then organize them using contact folders. And because they’re on the Mac, your users can continue taking advantage of all the powerful Mac features they love, including Spotlight, Quick Look, and data detectors.

Client Setup

The best way to set up Mail, iCal, and Address Book to access Exchange is with the Exchange Auto discover service. If this feature is enabled, users simply open the Add Account pane in Mail and enter their Exchange email addresses and passwords. Mail uses the Auto discover service in Exchange to grab all the pertinent information from the server and configure settings so your users can start using Exchange right away. If Auto discover is not configured on the Exchange Server, your users will need to manually configure their accounts by following the setup process that follows.

Manual setup

Mac OS X also supports manual confi guration of your Exchange server settings. In manual setup, users will need to follow these steps

1. Select Exchange 2007 from the Account Type pull-down menu.
2. Enter a description for the account (for example, Work or Exchange).
3. Enter the fully qualified domain name for the organization’s Exchange Client Access Server (CAS). (For example,, not exchange01). Note that the CAS doesn’t necessarily share the same address as the Outlook Web Access (OWA) Server—although they often do. Http prefixes are not required.
4. Enter the Exchange user name. Depending on your configuration, the user name can be similar in style to user01,, or example\user01.
5. Enter the Exchange password.
6. Make sure the Address Book and iCal checkboxes are selected to automatically set up those applications.

Remote Access

If the client computers are connected to the corporate network (behind the fi rewall), no additional setup is required to enable access to Exchange. To provide access outside the corporate network, you’ll need to ensure that port 443 is open and that EWS is accessible over this port. If your company allows Outlook Web Access, port 443 is most likely already open. In some instances, VPN may interfere with the Auto discover service, so users may need to set up manually or connect from within the network to configure their accounts.
