Mac with great versatility

I love the Mac mini primarily because of its versatility. The stock 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD powered me through the first month of use or so, then I ran into some issues because of lags and insufficient storage space. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I could upgrade the Mac myself without much hassle – there’s even a button I could press to access the HDD and RAM modules. Ever since I upgraded the stock HDD to an OCZ SSD and added 8GB of RAM, my Mac mini’s been unstoppable.

This Mac works seamlessly with my old ViewSonic monitor, so I didn’t have to spring for a Thunderbolt display, which isn’t exactly cheap. I’ve also been using my Mac mini as a digital player of sorts. I use the same Thunderbolt-to-DVI adapter that connects the mini to the monitor to hook the mini up to our Vizio Smart TV. Works perfectly in that setup too.

Mac mini quad-core Intel Core i7: Awesome little machine!

I had a first generation Intel iMac for the last six years, mainly because I was holding out for a 27" iMac and wouldn't settle for a Mini. Well this generation of Mac Mini isn't settling, though the monitor I have isn't as good as a 27" Apple monitor. It's bigger though, so that's something.

I have an i5 dual-core laptop provided by work and a home-built AMD 4.2GHz quad-core Win7 machine that are also connected to the same monitor and keyboard, so I have ample time to compare them with each other.

The quad-i7 in the Mini smokes the laptop hands down. The Mini is about twice as fast in general, and even faster on the graphics side of the fence. I haven't played any games on my laptop, so I can't compare it in that regard, but it's a work computer, not meant for games anyway.

The AMD machine is slightly slower in some areas, though it's really just a gaming machine so I don't do much with it day-to-day, but I did some work on it just to compare. It's only barely noticeable, but especially with Photoshop I could tell. The AMD is better for games, though; it's an APU but I already had a pretty good video card which I'm using (Radeon 5570) which while far from top of the line is enough to run Diablo III on high level graphics while the Mini has to go mid-level.

The transfer of data from my old iMac went without a hitch and it hit the ground running. I don't love it as much as I did the iMac when it was as new, but it's close. It's just plain awesome, if you don't mind a little 80s lingo. And having 16GB of RAM is such a relief after living with 3GB for so long.

I highly recommend the Fusion Drive that I got with mine; I have an older Mini with a 5400 RPM drive and that was one reason I didn't switch to a Mini for so long. The iMac is 2.16GHz and the old Mini 2GHz, but the Minis is half the speed at best in many fairly common operations. This Fusion Drive just makes that fear irrelevant. I haven't noticed a single issue with the many large copies and other disk-intensive operations I've done so far, though I daresay the initial copy from the iMac to the Mini would've been much faster with a 7200rpm drive. Still, it works pretty smart, and overall I'm loving it.

The only real problem I've hit is that the Blu-Ray writer I put into an external case to work with my Mini is not Mac compatible. Should've done the research BEFORE buying it, but I swapped it back into my AMD machine so it's not a total waste.

I recommend the new quad-i7 Mini with a Fusion Drive very highly. It is a whole lot of power in a very small package.

Mac mini: Great Media Server

I wanted a Mac mini with a SSD, but I really didn't want to take a risk installing it myself. Adding a SSD to the midlevel i5 model or the server model costs the same. For my use the AMD graphics really wouldn't benefit me so I went for the quad core server model. Way overkill for what essentially is an always-on iTunes server, but converting DVDs for iTunes with Handbrake should fly on this machine. Setup was very easy, since I really didn't need to worry about any of Lion's server settings. I swapped out the memory, which was quite easy.

With the standard 4GB memory the boot time was 17 seconds and I got a 32bit Geekbench score of 8350. With 8GB memory the boot time is still 17 to 20 seconds and the 32bit Geekbench score is 8750.

I have the system next to the TV in the living room, it looks very much like the Apple TV v1 that it replaces, but stays cool to the touch. I haven't noticed any noise from the unit, but the media on an external hard drive I do hear when it spins up. The unit got just a little warm when I copied 400GB of iTunes media onto the external hard drive, but otherwise I probably don't even have it breaking a sweat.

It's really nice having my iTunes content always available to 2 Apple TV's and 3 systems being fed with the Airport Express throughout the house! Also, ordering was great! I received this special order server in a week and a half.

Mac Mini quad core - 1TB Fusion Drive

I'm using the new mini as I write the review. It is very fast. I primarily use it for Photo Shop with a 23" Apple Cinema display. I would estimate based on a number of programs that it is 5 times faster than my old work horse dual processor Mac G5. With the new fusion drive it boots up in about 15 seconds and recent programs open almost immediately.
Cost me a great deal to upgrade all my programs but it should be worth it in the future. I used an external hard drive to transfer about 200GB of files from the G5. I don't do games so the graphic processor works fine for Photo Shop, etc. I estimate that it took me about 8 to 10 hours to get everything set up over a couple of days. I was on the internet with my home network with in the 1st hour.

Fast!

Bought this to replace a 2008 Mac Pro for CAD and graphics work. Upgraded with 16 gb 3rd party RAM. Wow! Fusion is so fast. I was a little concerned about integrated graphics for my application, but so far so good. Graphics work noticeably better w/ more RAM, even in non-work applications. I didn't realize how loud the Mac Pro was until I was switching between the two; the silence of the mini is such a relief. Does heat up pretty fast under heavy load, so it remains to be seen how it fairs with tasks that max out all cores for extended periods.

Very good accessory computer

BThe Mac Mini is a very capable computer for small tasks, I am bothered by e fact that it no longer includes a CD/DVD Super Drive, as my last one was very useful for making both CDs and DVDs on the network while my workstation did other work (like video editing).

We are using this one for light word processing and may do light photo pre-processing after a RAM upgrade. It is wireless-ready and comes with a monitor adapter that allows you to use a non-Apple monitor. Since we "re-purposes" an Apple monitor with a mini-display port, we can confirm that the Thunderbolt port in this Mac Mini will work with older Apple Mini-Display port monitors, such as the 24" LED Cinema Display, which is what we have ours hooked up to. Apple no longer sells this display.

We recommend the Mac Mini with the following reservations:

Anything you plan to install on this computer will need to either come from the Apple Store, or you will need to get of share an external CD/DVD drive to install new software. You may need an external CD/DVD drive anyway if you plan on burning discs with a Mac Mini (a use we had for our last one). iFixit rates the Mac Mini an 8 out of 10 for repairability. The only negatives are that you have to take the entire thing apart to replace the power supply and the processor is soldered onto the motherboard and, thus, may not be upgraded.

All in all a good buy. Especially if the price drops. We looked at earlier versions of the Mini with SuperDrives and found that buying this new one was actually MORE affordable than customizing an older one to include what this has stock.

Basic Mac Mini a Hit!

This replaced a G5 iMac that was pushing 7 years old. It seems blazingly fast compared to that old one. Right out of the box it worked like champ. It hooked right up to my old wireless bluetooth keyboard. The old computer would take up to a min to recognize and sync with my keyboard but the new Mini worked instantly. I ordered the mini display port adapter to hook up a new Viewsonic monitor via DVI. It connected right away and at 1920x1080.

I used the migration program from my old mac running 10.6 to this running 10.8 without a hitch. I got Parallels for a couple a Windows programs not available on the Mac. I don’t use it much but if I did I think I’d want 8GB of ram. 4 does well enough for seldom use but I notice the speed difference. All-in-all a great buy. Having used it now for a few weeks I would buy it all over again through your store. Fast shipping, full rebate on Parallels, great discount on the Mini.

Apple Mac mini dual-core Intel Core i5 i5 2.5GHz

The Mac mini is a fantastic computing product to build a small company processing system on. The mini is small but has all the processing facilities required to fulfill my computing requirements. And, being an Apple product ensures quality and best design in the field. My business computing requirements are supported with Apple products (iPhone, iPad and Mac mini). so I needed an Apple computing system to continue to support my Apple applications without breaking the bank....and that product was the Apple Mac mini. Absolutely the best way to enjoy an Apple computer for less than a nine hundred dollars, including keyboard, mouse and monitor!

Desktops should never have been larger than this!

This is my third Mini. The form factor is perfect. Desktops should never take up room. Now with the ease of customizing its perfect. After market RAM is cheap "fill it up". I also clone the hard drive onto a Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid drive and swap out the drive before I start to use the Mini. This gives me the performance of a solid state drive without the cost. Storage size is 500 to 750GB. The other benefit with maxing out the ram and upgrading the hard drive is I can purchase the lower performance Mini and make it scream for around $200.00. So the entry level Mini is always for me. When it’s time to upgrade I re-use the hard drive recycle the mini for around $110.00 so it brings the total cost down. Way Down! Offered here at a slightly discounted price and delivered on time. The store also followed up and offered any support if needed. Thanks!

A Simple yet powerful package!

I was waiting for the new release of mac mini since several days, as the last model was more than a year old. With a quad core 2.3 Ghz i7 processor, this is a power horse in a little package. The included 4 GB RAM is sufficient for general consumer desktop applications. I may upgrade the RAM to 8 or 16 GB, as I generally do graphics related work. I was hoping apple to come up with 8GB RAM with this model, as the base model has been upgraded from 2 to 4 GB with this release.

The Included 1 TB HDD is more than sufficient for storing lots of music, photos and documents. What I like the most in this unit is the ability to upgrade its components yourself, unlike other apple products, which cannot be opened by the user. Thanks to Apple for a simple desktop solution.

Amazed at Mac mini

Listen, so far, I haven't put this "little giant" to the test but, I couldn't ask for a better machine. I had never owned a MAC before but am glad that I finally purchased one. I chose the MAC Mini because of its size and construction.

The PC's that I had always bought seemed to be boxes that never had any particular design with more air inside than components. They have all been typically of one approach that "big looking" was more attractive. After holding the Mini in my hands and really looking it over, my conclusion is, it truly is a "cutting edge" design, sorry for the pun, THAT WORKS!!!!! Apple has impressed me. I am a very happy owner.
