fast and efficient
I bought this drive six months ago and it works great. It's sleek, makes very little noise and comes with some really nice software that makes backing up a piece of cake. The thing is rather compact, so it makes no impact on my laptop bag, while providing the much needed security of a backup.

We bought the 4big recently, and I've had no trouble with it so far. This is a really simple to operate device and we've reconfigured it for RAID5+spare as we really need the secure storage more than anything else at this stage. The enclosure is very nicely designed and very quiet too.

We have three teenage kids, and having the CloudBox as their shared storage drive has been really good. They can share files with each other with ease, and watch whatever they choose. I know they've been using the remote access app on their iPhones to access it too! Best of all they can't lose it on each other. The CloudBox makes sharing easy and fun.

Great tool for traveling
I bought two of these drives. (More accurately, my employer bought one, and I bought one for a backup). I was heading to China for three weeks to shoot a documentary project. My Nikon D800 fills up hard drives with a vengeance. I know I'd be shooting about 30 gigs of photos a day (plus a few 1080p videos).
Knowing the hazards of international travel, I thought these drives would be an great solution, being rugged as well as being bus-powered by the Thunderbolt and USB 3 ports. Unfortunately, my 2011 MacBook Pro only has USB 2.0 ports in addition to the Thunderbolt.
That's important because it made me change my workflow. I have a Firewire 800 CF card reader (and a USB 3.0 CF/SD card reader for backup). So it's quite fast downloading from my 1000x speed CF cards. I used Lightroom 4 with the library on my laptop and the files going directly to one of the drives via Thunderbolt. Very fast, limited only by the Firewire 800 interface. But when I tried to have Lightroom write a second copy of the files to the other drive via USB 2.0, it bogged the system down. Turns out it was faster to download to the Thunderbolt drive, then copy the new folder to the other drive for backup.
Anyway, my point being is that the drives are lightning fast when used with Thunderbolt and USB 3.0, but it will slow you down if your computer doesn't support Thunderbolt or USB 3.0. It would not be worth it in that case. But if you have either one or both of those interfaces, these drives will speed up your workflow. And knowing they're built to withstand a five-foot drop made me happy to leave one in my suitcase and the other in my camera backpack I carried on the plane. Another security measure that made this $5K trip a bit less stressful. Though at one point I thought I had lost one of the drives, I was happy to know everything was in the drive I had with me.
The only real down-side of these drives is that there are not two Thunderbolt ports that would let you Daisy Chain them and make the dual backup process I mention be not only viable but superfast. If you need a drive like this, you can't beat them for the price. They may not be the fastest, but they're fast enough, and they are tough as nails. And being orange, easy to spot in a pile of stuff.

Great Hard Drive
I bought this to use it as my primary editing drive for FCPX... we will see how that goes. (The drive is only a week old.) After running some speed tests on the Hard Drive compared to my internal hard disk drive on my 2011 iMac, it is about 50% faster than the internal drive. I am getting 80-90 MB/s on the internal hard disk and about 175 MB/s on the external Thunderbolt drive, which is excellent. It's not 10 GB/s, but it's also limited by the drives and processor of the system you're using to transfer data to it. For example, if you have a FireWire 800 drive transferring data to a Thunderbolt drive, you'll be capped by whatever the max read speed is on the FireWire drive, internal drive, etc. I moved my 200 GB iPhoto library to it and it opens now in about half the time than it did on the internal drive.
Just a note, when you move files off of the internal disk, you must set up manual backups (use 3rd party software) because Time Machine will not work with external drives. I bought SmartBackup to backup my Thunderbolt drive to another external drive that I have. Overall, it's an excellent drive!

LaCie 2TB P'9230 Porsche Design Desktop Drive
This is a great product. Once I got power to the unit, the startup was simple, and in short order I was using it as the "time machine" for my mac. It looks more cool than other external hard drives as well.
If it doesn't power up at first, don't panic. It comes with a variety of snap-on plugs, so you can choose the one that matches the outlet for your country/region. At first I had no power. I checked the power strip, checked my connections, snapped the plug on and off - still no power. I took a small screwdriver and slightly pried out the metal connections on the plug base, snapped the plug back on, and plugged it in - immediate power, good to go.
It has run smoothly since. I highly recommend it, especially at the sale price.

LaCie 2TB Little Big Disk Thunderbolt
Pros: Insanely fast transfer speeds. Several Gigabytes per minute speeds! Can more than max out the speed of even SSD disks. Daisy chaining (RAID) more than one of these units together on the Thunderbolt bus actually INCREASES the transfer speed. It transfers "small" files below 25MB so fast you have to double check to be certain it actually happened!
Pro: the case is quite high-quality and the optional foot pedestal is rock solid and gives the unit a surprisingly low center of gravity.
Pro: I bought the refurb unit at a dramatic discount, looks brand-new, running perfect for several weeks now. I really like it.
Cons: not really a con, just a buyer beware: It does have some fan noise, about 60db according to my little iPhone app meter, and I don't think it has variable speed. Not harsh but if you are insistent on absolute silence to match your Mac Mini, etc., you will want to plan to locate this somewhere besides the desktop. I have it on a little file cabinet beside my desk and I have to strain to hear it. Does sort of defeat the otherwise aesthetically pleasing nature of it a bit I suppose.
Con: the blue light is cool, but the speeds are so fast it's rather pointless. If you have it on the desktop in dark lighting it can be a bit annoying. Could easily solve with a little piece of opaque tape or just point it away from you. Luckily the little thunderbolt cable and the back of the unit is still ergonomically pleasing, so you could even point it backwards and it's not unsightly. Lacie should include a little utility to control its brightness.
Overall a big fan of the form factor of these Lacie disk boxes. Probably the neatest look I've seen, very sturdy and very functional.

LaCie eSATA Thunderbolt Hub
I bought this to go with a new Retina MBP. I'd had several drives daisy-chained through FireWire 800, but all of them had eSATA connections that I couldn't use with my 2006 MBP. After hooking everything up, it works like a dream. Transfer speeds at least 3x what FW 800 was giving me. No configuration needed. It even serves up my Apple Cinema Display connected via the "pass-through" TB port and a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter.
The only odd thing is in System Profiler, it reports a 6Gb/s transfer rate, but LaCie's spec is only up to 3Gb/s. Maybe it was "quietly upgraded', I don't know, and can't tell, as my drives are only 3Gb/s. If they were to improve it, I might think that 4 eSATA ports would be nice. And the fastest spec, too.

LaCie 2TB Little Big Disk Thunderbolt
I must admit that I was a little leery of buying a refurbished hard drive setup, but have been up and running just fine now for a few weeks. I use the Little Big Disk mostly as a Time Machine backup disk and for that it works very well. It's quick and I never even notice that it's running, so it's not a resource hog.
The Thunderbolt interface works as advertised and allows the drive to reach some amazing performance levels, reducing the time for the initial backup to complete dramatically.
As a few others have noted, the fan for the drives is a bit on the noisy side. It won't rattle the windows or anything like that, but you will definitely notice that it's running.
So far, it's been a great addition to my desktop!

LaCie 2TB Little Big Disk Thunderbolt
I plugged in the little big disk and it was simple to set up. What would have taken hours to back up 167gigs took about 35 to 45 minutes. It is so small and the construction is very good. It will last a long time. I bought this refurbished and I was a little worried but everything works very well. That sounds a little funny but we all know that a hard drive can fail but the case I think will last forever. I have been using it for a couple of weeks and it is the hard drive that will be traveling around with me. Glad I purchased this product.

LaCie Rugged 500GB External
Got this drive because we were going to have to support a lot of Macs where I work. Spoke with the Apple engineers that were sent out to setup our servers and they suggested an external firewire drive for imaging, saving stuff, installing, etc. I had been looking at these for a while and then saw how little they cost. I pulled the trigger and have never regretted it. This thing is fast, reliable and portable. What more could you want? My company is now looking at buying some of these for the other support techs. Highly recommended!

Yep -- this one rocks!
Portable drives should generally be thought of as "external drives." They're really made for the desktop and should probably stay there. After losing a 2TB "portable" drive I was about to give up -- but I'd already ordered this Rugged Drive. Well -- this is the real deal. I've been using it for over a year -- lots of travel -- with no issues.
It's so easy, no power cord needed (gotta love that!) just plug it in. While it's not really rated for video editing I can edit right off the drive with a Firewire 800 and do simple video editing. Not bad! Get this drive, and don't look back if you are planning on traveling back and forth to the office with it. Light, but tough. Takes up almost no desk space. Well made product.
(NOTE: IMO A big mistake people make with these drives is over filling them -- wham! The drive will lock up forever, and nothing can get it to mount again. Always leave at least 10% free space on these drives and save yourself the heartache. So a 500GB drive needs at least 50GB free space to be sure it won’t turn into a door stop.)

The LaCie Rugged 500GB External All-Terrain FireWire 800 / FireWire 400 & Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Portable Hard Disk Drive is a great little drive. Fast and super easier to use. Traveled well and I was able to use it on an older G4 Mac laptop without a hitch. The drive did not slow down when working with larger art files directly on the drive. I would recommend this external drive to everyone who travels with their files.

LaCie's drives are the only ones I'll buy.
LaCie drives have always been reliable for me. They load quickly, have a good solid construction. I've had drives made by other manufacturers that decide to lose all data, or all accesibility. LaCie drives haven't done that to me to date. This drive has several different methods of interfacing, which is why I bought it; I use mostly FireWire 800 but it's good to have USB available.

Easy and sure disc burner by LaCie
When I needed a more reliable DVD and CD-ROM burner than the bargain-priced model I bought one year ago, I looked again for a read/write peripheral with both FireWire and USB 2 interfaces. The LaCie d2 featuring 22x burn rate and LightScribe for burning labels directly onto the DVD or CD disc is the right one. Unlike the previous burner, it completes every write sequence to a disc fully without delays or 'hanging' with an error code at the end of a burn. (My bargain-priced DVD burner sometimes copied the data perfectly and finished with an unexplained error code, forcing me to run a comparison of the entire 4.7 GB.) The LaCie d2 DVD and CD-ROM burner works flawlessly, quickly and easily with my desktop iMac-Intel and 9-year old iBook G3.

LaCie and MacMall is La Perfect
I purchased a LaCie d2 1TB external hard drive from MacMall and I wanted to take a minute to share my experience with everyone. First - the ordering was simple. Second - the delivery was faster than expected. Third - the LaCie worked right out of the box - I needed to do a Time Machine on my work mac and all I had to do was plug it in. Since then I was able to wipe the LaCie clean and put all my movies and music from my home office on it and take and load them on my work mac - simple, fast and flawless. Our office only buys from MacMall even though we shop around, we still come back for the best price and selection of what we are looking to purchase. Thanks for always having what we need, when we need it, at a price that beats the rest.

LaCie Rugged 500GB External multi-interface drive
So far, so good. Seems to be rugged, but I have not dropped it yet. It replaced an OWC drive that stood vertically and died (head crash) when it fell over while capturing video. Since this drive does not stand up vertically, it cannot fall over and hit the floor (which is good).
I really like the three interface design. I use it for video acquisition direct-to-disk using a MacBook Pro. The camera is a FW400 device so the drive goes in the FW800 port. It does not have an on/off switch so after unmounting, one simply disconnects it -- kinda scary at first. No read/write indicator either, so the only way you know it's working is that it mounts and reads/writes without error. My brother bought one and based on current experience, I'd recommend it to others.

Fantastic external hard drive. Easy to use; paired it up with my mini in no time! Very user friendly. I have all my mac apps running on it: iPhoto, GarageBand, etc. And, I configured iTunes to store my media on it rather than on my mini's hard drive. Solid; backups are very smooth and easy to integrate with Time Machine (especially if you download the free Time Machine Editor program... so YOU can schedule your backups.)
