LaCie d2 hard drives are the perfect storage devices for data-heavy tasks and processes, whether at home or at the office. These hard drives are compatible with a handful of interfaces, including USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt, making for speedy data transfers and universal connectivity for both Mac and PC.
The LaCie d2 Quadra USB 3.0 hard drive is fully equipped for high-speed performance, with 7200-rpm drives and a 5Gb/s USB 3.0 interface that enables data transfer speeds of 130MB/s. The LaCie d2 Thunderbolt hard drive is even faster, with the Thunderbolt interface capable of transferring data at 170MB/s. These professional-grade hard drives are designed with backward-compatibility, too, providing connectivity with USB 2.0, FireWire 400, and eSATA. For space-saving convenience, multiple d2 Quadra and Thunderbolt drives can be stacked or rack-mounted.
The LaCie d2 network 2 is the ideal single-disk NAS device for small businesses, since it’s designed for seamless, convenient integration. The d2 network 2 delivers file sharing speeds of up to 68MB/s and can be configured for automated backups, a convenient feature for the simultaneous backup of multiple workstations.
I ordered the d2 Quadra 2TB hard drive to use as a backup drive for my MBP, which was quickly running out of internal storage for my music and photos. This hard drive has been very reliable so far. I’ve been using it for a couple of months now without problem. I mainly use the FireWire 800 connection and file transfers are very fast, much faster than with any other external hard drive I’ve used. I daisy-chain this hard drive with another FireWire hard drive sometimes and the LaCie d2 Quadra sometimes ends up speeding up the other drive.
Design-wise, I’ve got no complaints. The d2 Quadra looks durable and the base makes the entire thing quite steady, so I don’t have to worry about vibrations toppling it over. The fins on the drive’s sides must be really effective at cooling the drive as it works, since I haven’t felt any heat coming from it though it’s less than a foot from my keyboard. I read somewhere that multiple d2 Quadras can be stacked on top of each other and I want to try that when my next Quadra comes in a couple of days.

Great universal connectivity
I’ve been looking for an external hard drive that I can use with my older computers as well as with my new Mac mini. The LaCie 4TB d2 Quadra hard drive with eSATA, USB 3.0, and FireWire 800 seemed to match all my needs, so I gave it a try. A month after I got it, the hard drive’s still working perfectly, like brand-new.
The d2 Quadra’s universal connectivity features are the biggest advantages for me so far. I run my business from my home office and will occasionally have to use files and other marketing collateral from my older computers for current projects on my Mac mini. My older desktop and laptop still use eSATA and USB 2.0, respectively, and it’s great that I can use my new LaCie d2 Quadra for these computers. Data transfer via these interfaces is not the fastest, but the connection is stable and reliable. FireWire 800 connections are much faster, as I can back up my Mac mini with Time Machine with no problem at all.
I only wish that this hard drive comes with more storage space. At this rate I’ll have to buy another d2 Quadra before the year ends if I want to keep backing up my Mac mini.

Speedy Thunderbolt connections
I got the 3TB LaCie d2 Quadra Thunderbolt hard drive. I’ve never used Thunderbolt hard drives before so I was pretty surprised that Thunderbolt really does deliver a transfer speed that is much faster than the current FireWire 800 interface and the previous FireWire 400 interface. Backing up my MBA suddenly takes about a quarter of the time it used to take Time Machine.
The best speed I’ve achieved via Thunderbolt on this drive is 160MB/s. The faster read/write speeds are a great advantage for someone who regularly puts together anywhere from twenty to thirty posters each day. I don’t think that I can go back to using even FireWire after using the drive’s Thunderbolt connection. I’ve moved some of my old projects to my d2 Quadra and I discovered that even just browsing through them is much faster.
Another thing I like about this hard drive is that it makes Photoshop and Lightroom run even more smoothly. This has made editing even my most HD photos a breeze. I don’t have to worry anymore that Photoshop might freeze up and crash while I’m in the middle of a project because there’s not enough storage space on my laptop.

Well-built external HD for ultrabook
I’m bound to run out of storage space on my Samsung Series 5 soon, so I got this 3TB d2 Quadra Thunderbolt hard drive so I could back up my older projects and archived documents and just move them back when needed.
I had some worries about the initial setup but a call to MacMall support helped me figure out how to format and partition my hard drive to keep my important files secure. Once my hard drive was ready, I immediately set it up with Windows Backup and it’s been working perfectly so far. I now have so much more storage space on my laptop. This Thunderbolt drive is just as fast as I expected. I barely had to wait for it to back-up everything on my laptop.
The d2 Quadra Thunderbolt seems to be built better than most of the desktop hard drives I’ve seen online. The case is made entirely out of aluminum, which makes it very durable against scratches and wear and tear. It also seems to be effective at moving heat away from the hard drive itself, since the case never gets the slightest bit hot.

Best network drive for your money
I’ve wanted to get a network hard drive for a while, if only to boost file sharing speeds on our home network and to serve as additional storage space. So when I saw this deal on the 2TB LaCie d2 Network 2 hard drive, I knew I had to take the deal immediately.
The d2 network 2 hard drive was very easy to set up with Apple Extreme, both for Mac OS X and Windows 7. I spent less than an hour partitioning the drive and making private folders for my daughters and myself and public folders that we all could share. I was afraid we’d run into issues since we had different operating systems on the network, but the drive was immediately recognized by all systems and we haven’t had any problems with the drive so far in terms of connectivity.
Once the network drive got going, there hasn’t been any downtime at all. File sharing is always very fast, as I’ve experienced pulling a 650MB video from the drive to my ThinkPad 11 in less than 3 minutes. Speeds have remained consistent despite nightly backups of all computers on the network.
