HP Slate 7: Nice and inexpensive Android tablet

Loving the Slate tablet from HP! Its dual-core speed is quite good in handling tasks you throw at it. HD movies, Internet radio, document editing, you name it. Of course, the tablet is far from being a productivity machine. The screen is a little smaller than the original iPad’s but the HP Slate 7 more than makes up for it with portability and comfort. The form factor is just right. It’s got a good feel on one hand. The back side of the Slate feels rubberized and solid to the touch. You can hold it with one hand and not experience any fatigue even if you use it for an extended period of time.

I also like the fact that the HP Slate 7 is selling at a very nice price point, even cheaper than the Nexus 7 and other seven-incher from well-known brands. Also, I noticed that not all Android tablets come with an expandable memory card option. The HP Slate 7 does, and it’s a really nice thing for users like me who can’t rely on cloud computing because of limited access to the Internet. The availability of more physical storage is quite convenient. All in all, this has been a good tablet so far and I expect it to be my go-to mobile device.

Great value for an Android tablet

I bought the HP Slate 7 as a birthday gift for my kid brother and he’s enjoying it so much that he barely ever puts it down. The tablet’s dual-core processor and 1 GB RAM are quick enough for my brother to use it all day checking email, chatting and video-calling with his friends, browsing the Web, and playing games. He’s really getting a kick out of the Beats Audio technology, too.

One of the main reasons why I got him the HP Slate 7 is that the tablet runs on Android Jelly Bean, which has a much more user-friendly and intuitive interface. The Google Play Store is a virtual candy store of free apps, too. I’ve already downloaded some document creation and general reference apps on his tablet so he can use it when he goes off to college.

I got to use it a couple of times, and the first thing I noticed was how good the tablet fit in my hand. The rubberized material on the back panel makes it easy to get a good grip on the tablet. The metallic sides also make the tablet feel very solid and durable. I held it in my hand for a couple of hours while I read a couple of magazines and didn’t feel any discomfort in my wrist.

Two thumbs up for the HP Slate 7 tablet

I’ve wanted to buy a tablet for quite some time but I didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a tablet when I already have a laptop. Fortunately, at $169, the HP Slate 7 fit right into my budget. Its OS, Android Jelly Bean 4.1.1, is also very easy to use, so I’ve been able to download free apps for video playback & download, along with some games. I’ve read many user reviews that complain about how slow the tablet is when it comes to booting up certain games, but I’ve never experienced that.

The display isn’t exactly cutting-edge, especially when compared to other tablets, but it suits me just fine and I wasn’t really expecting Retina display quality for the Slate 7’s price. I’ve been using the tablet to watch movies and TV show episodes, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the tablet’s Beats audio technology works even on videos.

Another thing I love about the Slate 7 is that it doesn’t come loaded with apps that I can’t uninstall, so there’s less clutter on my tablet and I have more room on the onboard storage for movies, TV shows, and music.

Slate 7 tablet: great tablet from HP

NI’ve wanted to buy a tablet for my personal use for quite some time, and I’m glad I waited for HP’s Slate 7 before I made any purchase. Since it’s from HP, I know that it’s going to be durable and it’s going to last me for years. The Slate 7 is also a nice size, so I can easily hold it with one hand without fear of dropping it.

One of the things I like most about the Slate 7 is that it offers a great amount of storage space for its size. The on-board storage let me install all the apps and games I need, and I still have plenty of room to spare. Should I ever manage to fill up all the extra space, I like knowing that I can plug a 32GB microSD card into the tablet for even more storage space. Looking for good apps to install on my tablet is easy, since the Slate 7 is pre-installed with the Play Store.

I also love that this tablet comes pre-installed with a handful of useful apps. I didn’t even have to download apps for email and Web browsing myself.

Best tablet for music

I hadn’t really expected the Slate 7 to be such an amazing device for playing music. After all, tablets aren’t exactly built for high-quality audio playback. The Slate 7 really surprised me, though. Its audio output is powered by Beats Audio, and the difference the software makes is really noticeable. The tablet produces a loud, clear sound, so I can enjoy watching videos or listening to music even without headphones. In fact, I’ve been enjoying the Slate 7’s Beats Audio so much that I don’t like listening to music or watching videos on other tablets anymore.

It’s also great that the Slate 7 is designed to accommodate standard 3.5mm headphones. I’ve been using my Beats by Dre headphones with it and I haven’t experienced any problems so far.

HP Slate 7: Quick, lightweight tablet

This is my first time using a tablet from HP, since my previous two tablets were from Samsung and Lenovo. I was pleasantly surprised by the HP Slate 7’s performance. The dual-core 1.6GHz processor kept the tablet quick and responsive, even when I had multiple apps open. The tablet’s 1GB RAM probably helped its performance, too. My Slate 7 had a one or two hiccups when I first booted a 3D game, but the lag was a one-time event and hasn’t happened again.

What I love about this tablet is its size. It’s small enough to fit into most of my bags and I can carry it around all day, no problem. And it’s not only small, it’s light, too. I love that it’s lightweight enough for me to use on my train and bus rides without straining my wrist, so I can keep myself entertained during my daily commute.

Great tablet, overall

I got a tablet at the suggestion of my daughter – she said she wanted me to be able to look at photos of my granddaughter wherever I went. And, I have to say, viewing photos on my new HP Slate 7 has been a joy. I don’t really know much about tablet displays, and technology in general, but I do appreciate the fact that the HP Slate 7 has a wide view angle LCD. Photos of my granddaughter remain beautiful even when viewed at different angles.

My HP Slate 7 hardly ever lags, too, despite the fact that I’ve nearly reached the limit of the tablet’s 8 GB storage. My daughter tells me I can insert a microSD card into the tablet so I can add more photos, which I’m looking forward to. The tablet’s Android software has been very easy to use, even for non tech-savvy people like me. Checking my email takes a couple of minutes. The interface feels very intuitive, too, and it was surprisingly easy to get the hang of adding widgets to the home screen.

Capable little tablet

I’ve been using my HP Slate 7 for close to a month now and I’m satisfied with its performance so far. This tablet’s combination of a dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM provides sufficient power for most of the apps I use, including performance-intensive games and HD video playback. The 8 GB of on-board storage was a little on the small side for my tastes, but the tablet had no trouble recognizing my 16 GB microSD card.

The HP Slate 7 has a lot to offer in terms of connectivity, being ready for WiFi, Bluetooth, and micro-USB connections. I was expecting an Android OS that’s a bit more advanced than 4.1, but Jellybean is pretty easy to use and is quite intuitive. I also loved that the HP Slate 7 came pre-loaded with a bunch of apps, including apps for listening to music, watching movies, and even reading e-books and magazine.

I’m also enjoying the Slate 7’s long battery life. I’ve used many tablets before, but none have let me play nearly four straight hours of video without dying out and needing a recharge. On a single charge, I can watch a couple of movies and have enough battery left over to check and send emails.

Customer Q&As

How do I transfer files onto my HP Slate 7?

Asked by Terry Pratt from NY | May 26, 2013

Best Answer
The HP Slate 7 comes with a micro-USB port as well as a USB cable. Use the cable to connect the tablet to your computer; your computer should detect the tablet as an additional drive or storage device. Once you access the tablet’s storage through your computer, you can easily transfer photos, documents, and other files to your tablet.

How do I download apps with this tablet?

Asked by Bill Shaw from CA | May 25, 2013

Best Answer
The HP Slate 7 is pre-installed with Google Play Store, the primary app marketplace for Android devices. Apps in the Play Store are arranged into categories, so locating the apps you want should be a hassle-free process. Keep in mind, though, that not all apps are available for free. Remember to check the prices, if any, on the apps you want to download to avoid surprise charges on your credit card.

What’s the version of the HP Slate 7’s Android OS?

Asked by Michelle Cooper from CA | May 24, 2013

Best Answer
The HP Slate 7 is pre-loaded with the first version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Though this is not the most recent Jelly Bean version, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is optimized for convenience and improved user experience. Android 4.1 enables smoother scrolling and animation, so the device is more responsive to onscreen gestures. Android 4.1 also allows your HP Slate 7 to display larger, more informative notifications for added convenience.
