  Great Entry Level Machine,  2013-02-19
By Dennis Champagne

Upgraded my wife's older 21.5 inch iMac with a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core2Duo. This newer machine is very quiet, fast, and fits well in her work space. The large internal drive will hold all of her data plus much more. She was already using an external optical drive because of the volume of discs she burns. Apple's slot loaders have never been very reliable, and are a pain to replace. This new machine is noticeably faster than her old machine.

I do like the 21.5 inch systems because the 27 inch models are just too high and force me to tilt my head back to get my glasses to work best to read the text. This is a problem with many users with bi or trifocal lens glasses.

My next iMac will replace my older 24 inch 3Ghz Core2Duo. I'll probably save the price of the larger screen and choose a faster CPU, max out the ram, and get the fusion drive option. I put a 256GB SSD in the optical drive bay in my iMac, but it does mean that I have 2 volumes. The fusion drive will simplify my file management.

I am concerned about the difficulty of upgrading the ram or doing any maintenance on the inside of the machine. I'm already seeing tutorials about how to get inside these machine, and I work on Mac's and PC's as a business, so I'm pretty sure I'll be able to work on them in the future. Still, it would be a better idea that Apple designed some maintenance features in their design.
