New iMac -- Not Without a MAJOR Disappointment,  2012-12-15
By Greg Ryan

I've used Apple computers for more than 25 years, so it goes without saying that I am a fan. However, I was shocked to discover that the new iMacs do not come with a DVD player. I had not been paying attention to all the "words" about the new machines, so when I ordered one, I never gave it a thought if it would have a DVD player. (Do you wonder if your next automobile will come with a radio?) Apple wants everything to go to iCloud so the DVD player is considered a thing of the past. But what about all the music CDs I will want to put on my new iMac and iPod? The DVD's I will want to create for friends? (There's no iDVD software anymore either.) The new sleeker appearance? Who cares? Laptops might need to be thinner and thinner for travelers' convenience, but who needs a thinner and thinner desktop model to free up a few more centimeters of air-space on their desk top at the expense of losing a valuable piece of hardware? So, Apple buyers should be better informed up-front that there's no DVD player. Where Apple always explains that "FaceTime"-use will require that both parties have that software installed, they should also include an asterisk where iMovie is mentioned that users will need to purchase a Super Drive -- as I did -- if they want to burn or watch DVDs. Customer Service also explained that I will have to find a copy of iDVD on eBay to burn CDs or find a shareware app online. As the old saying goes: buyer beware!
