  Great for research!,  2013-04-01
By David

I always scoffed at the relevance of any computer, such as the Air, that lacked any capacity for expansion. I grew up in the 80s and early 90s making Franken-computers with my friends while we sipped our Sunny D. But I digress...

Now I find myself in dusty archives doing graduate research work. For this I need something extremely portable and simple. I have a 21" iMac at home for the fun stuff(just found out Kim Jong Un has one too!). This Air is perfect for my simple, more serious needs...internet, word processing, chat roulette. Truth is, many archives only allow researchers to bring a few pieces of paper and a laptop with them into the study area. If not for my Macbook Air, my investigations into sex crime in Plymouth Colony would take weeks, if not months, longer.

As perfect as the Air is for me, it has innumerable limitations. I wouldn't try to run any heavy-hitting programs on it (my fiancé is an architect, so I know what havoc those programs can wreak on an unsuspecting Macbook). While its processor is fast, the Air has about a week's worth of space if you're an architect, graphic designer(the employed kind), or techno music producer. The screen is big enough to read documents comfortably, but just about nothing else. I wouldn't use it as a door stop either (door passes right over).

In all, the Air is great for me and maybe the other five people sitting here in the New York Historical Society library. If you don't absolutely need it for a specific purpose, like I do, get something more substantial that will stay relevant longer. Despite its sleek design, the Air is yet to get anyone laid. Hence the 4-star rating.
